A growing network of professionals who believe female consultants deserve to do their best work: freely, safely, and with dignity.

Female consultants are powering the global economy. It's time we protected that power.

Female consultants and independent professionals are a formidable force. Closing the gender gap in employment and entrepreneurship could boost the global economy by as much as USD 7 trillion (UN Women). The World Bank calculates that increasing women's participation in the economy, including closing gaps in employment and entrepreneurship, could increase global GDP by as much as 20% (World Economic Forum). Over the last 20 years, the number of female consultants has risen by 191% (Consultport) - a remarkable rise that reflects both our talent and our drive to build careers on our own terms.

And yet, the systems designed to protect workers were largely built for employees, not for the growing army of independent women doing extraordinary work outside traditional structures. Shelf Circle exists to change that.

The gap nobody talks about.

As a female consultant, you are your own HR department, your own legal team, and your own accounts receivable. You bring your best to every client brief, but when something goes wrong that has nothing to do with the quality of your work, you are often left to navigate it alone.

Conservatively, one in four women will experience sexual harassment in the workplace at some stage during their working lives (Global Compliance News). For independent consultants, the vulnerability is amplified: there is no internal HR to turn to, no employment contract to invoke, and often no one to stand between you and the person controlling your next invoice or contract renewal. South African courts have confirmed that existing labour remedies are largely inapplicable in cases where harassment involves third parties (Daily Maverick). This means the legal framework that protects employees simply does not extend to consultants in the same way, leaving a significant and largely invisible gap.

That loss, of skill, of experience, of potential, is one the industry cannot afford.

Research by Catalyst found that two-thirds of workers from marginalised racial and ethnic groups across South Africa, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have encountered racism in the workplace at some point in their careers, and half have experienced racism in their current jobs. For women navigating these environments as independent consultants - without the protection of an employer, an internal advocate, or an HR process - the weight is compounded.

On the financial side, the data is equally stark. Female freelancers are paid late 31% of the time, compared to 24% for their male counterparts (Hello Bonsai) — a gap that cannot be explained by the quality of the work delivered. Research has found that victims of workplace sexual harassment are more likely to face financial stress and have their career paths derailed entirely (Global Compliance News). The personal and professional costs compound quickly, and many talented women simply decide it isn't worth it.

A circle of support for when you need it most.

Shelf Circle is a pro-bono professional network, founded by Studio Shelf, connecting female consultants in South Africa with qualified specialists who are willing to offer their expertise when it matters most.

This is not everyday business support. Shelf Circle is specifically designed for the moments that fall outside the normal running of your practice, the situations that are unfair, unexpected, and often deeply personal.

Legal professionals

To advise on harassment, discrimination, contract disputes, and situations where you don't know your rights or where to begin.

HR specialists

To help you navigate sensitive workplace dynamics with third-party clients, and to understand what recourse is available to independent contractors.

Financial and accounting professionals

Not for your annual tax return, but for when a large corporation is running you between departments to avoid settling a legitimate invoice, or when a client is unfairly disputing payment to gain leverage over you.

Psychologists and counsellors

Because the emotional toll of these situations is real, and you deserve support that acknowledges that.

What Shelf Circle is not:

Shelf Circle volunteers are generously giving their time to situations that go beyond the day-to-day of running a business. This network is for exceptional circumstances, not routine business administration.

An accountant in the Shelf Circle is not available to help with your quarterly VAT return. But if a corporate client is deliberately withholding payment, sending you from department to department, or using financial leverage to intimidate you, that is exactly the kind of situation a Shelf Circle accountant is here for.

A lawyer in the Shelf Circle is not your contract drafter for new client work. But if you are facing harassment, discrimination, or are being threatened in connection with your livelihood, a Shelf Circle lawyer can help you understand your position and your options.

The distinction matters because it keeps the focus on the women who need these professionals most, in the moments that count.

You have the power to keep talented women in the game.

Shelf Circle is looking for professionals who want to use their expertise for good: lawyers, HR practitioners, psychologists, financial advisors, and accountants who believe the independent consulting landscape should be safer and fairer for women.

You don't need to be a woman to be part of this. You just need to be motivated by the idea that talent should speak louder than power, and that no woman should have to abandon a career she has built because the systems around her failed to protect her.

Volunteering with Shelf Circle is flexible. You set the terms of your availability, and you will only be approached for situations that genuinely fall within your area of expertise. Our commitment to you is that your time will be used purposefully and respectfully.
